TV OR NOT TV?

These days it seems you’re judged more by how many televisions you own, rather than by the collection of cars you drive. That’s according to the Original Factory Shop, with research conducted amongst its customers revealing that the average number of goggle boxes per household was three, while some had as many as eight! The findings of this research coincide with the launch of a £99 LCD TV/DVD Combo with built in digital FREEVIEW.

“Gone are the days when a television was considered a luxury,” comments Colin Leggatt from The Original Factory Shop, “now it’s a very affordable necessity. With prices being so low there are now televisions in the kitchen, the study and even the bathroom, as well in places where you would have traditionally found them such as the living room.

“The big difference we noticed is the number of children who have televisions in their own bedrooms, something that their parents would never have been allowed. There was some debate about what age this privilege should be granted but while most people thought eleven was a reasonable compromise, some parents admitted that children as young as four had their own television!”

The advent of the plasma screen, the introduction of digital technology and increasingly competitive prices are acknowledged as being the main reasons for the increase in television ownership and while everyone complains about how rubbish the programmes are, it appears that people think that there is enough choice for everyone.

“With so many televisions per household it seems that there aren’t as many arguments about who takes ownership of the remote control,” continues Leggatt, “as everyone can view what they want, when they want. Some people had televisions in their shed, some in their toilet and a few in their car. Who knows where people will be watching TV in twenty years time?”

Notes to editors

This week sees the launch of a 15.4 inch LCD TV/DVD Combo with built in digital FREEVIEW at The Original Factory Shop for just £99.00.

The Original Factory Shop was established in 1969 as part of Peter Black’s selling M&S seconds. In 2005 George Foster joined as CEO with a strong retail track record. Most recently he was chief executive of TJ Hughes and was responsible for taking it from turnover of £60 million to over £200 million.

In December 2007, George successfully led the secondary management buy-out of the company backed by Duke Street Capital. In January 2009, Angela Spindler replaced George Foster as CEO; Angela’s previous role was Managing Director at Debenhams. Before this she spent 10 years at ASDA where she held a number of key board level trading roles and was the Executive Managing Director of the successful George brand. Angela’s early career was with Pedigree Pet foods and Cadbury Schweppes.

The Original Factory Shop has a turnover of over £100 million and aims to grow through an organic growth programme of opening 30 stores per annum.

To service these growth targets, in 2007 the company relocated its warehouse and HQ to a 145,000 sq ft facility in Burnley capable of servicing up to 200 stores.
